Your First Place

A Place is somewhere you can be, not only data you can open. It has presence, boundaries and memory, and your first one is already waiting for you.

Mira named her room "The Kitchen Table" — where real conversations happen. No one would see the name but her, at first. That was fine. She'd been part of spaces built for audiences before. This one was hers.

Your HOME

Every account has a HOME, a Place that is yours from the moment the account exists. Your HOME has three zones, public, common and private, and rooms live inside zones.

Type commands in Urchin's terminal. To see where you are:

look

look describes the place you are in, its exits and who is present. go <exit> moves you, and home brings you back to your HOME from anywhere.

Create a Room

Step into a zone first, then create the room:

go public
create ~room kitchen --desc The kitchen table, where real conversations happen

A room cannot be created from the HOME itself. If you try, the node answers "Rooms must be created inside a zone" and names the zones you can go into. Give a room a description later with describe room <name> <text>.

look in the zone now shows the room as an exit, and go kitchen takes you inside.

What Is a Place?

  • It has boundaries. What is inside is distinct from what is outside.
  • It persists. When you sign out and come back, your places are where you left them.
  • It connects to other places. Exits link places into a map you can walk.
  • It supports presence. You can see who else is here.

Create a Capsule

A capsule is a container whose access is controlled by capabilities. You decide, per person, what they can do with it.

create ~capsule shelf

To let someone else use it, grant them a capability: grant shelf <identity> read, write. The manual covers capsules, their services, and share capsule. Only a capsule's owner can share it.

Capsules are inspired by the "vats" of the E language, isolated containers that talk to each other through capability tokens. A person you invite gets access to exactly the capsules you grant, not to everything you own.

Where It Is Kept

Your places, rooms and capsules are saved in the node's database, in the Kunuleco data folder. Quit Urchin, start it again, sign in, and they are as you left them.

Next Step

You have a place of your own. The Common zone of your HOME is also where a Hall goes, a place for a group rather than for you alone.
